Pull Troops Out Of Afghanistan Now
News that the latest soldier to be killed in Afghanistan was a Territorial Army rifleman surely emphasises the already strong public perception that now is the time for troops to be pulled out of Afghanistan.
Andrew Ian Fentiman, 23, is another waste of a life – the 97th serviceman to have been killed so far this year in Afghanistan.
Given that he was well educated having read Mechanical Engineering at the University of Leicester, and was destined to become an Army Officer makes it even harder to swallow.
The British Army have exceeded their duties in Afghanistan; there is no knowing how, or indeed if, they can ever leave safe in the knowledge that Afghan civilians are equipped to see of the Taliban themselves.
Only last month, an Afghan Policeman killed five British Soldiers who were training and mentoring him and others to improve their skill set.
Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, today stated that The January Conference would ‘identify a process for transferring district by district to full Afghan control and, if at all possible, set a timetable for transfer starting in 2010′.
Yet, what Mr Brown says and does are often unrelated.
British Foreign Secretary David Miliband reiterated the MoD’s continuation with their ’strategy’ as he told the Nato Parliamentary Assembly that Britain are prepared to send more troops to comply with the agreed strategy.
Miliband said: ‘I, as much as anyone else, want to bring our troops back home to safety.
”But we cannot leave a vacuum which the Taliban will quickly fill, and under their umbrella, al-Qaeda quickly follow.
”But only a comprehensive strategy can deal with the causes and ensure that when we leave, we do so knowing that we will not have to return.”
This is all well and good but how long will it take to implement this ‘comprehensive strategy’?
Pull the troops out now and save yet more bloodshed and the loss of young lives.
Do you agree? Should the Government pull our troops out of Afghanistan, or are they right to try and safeguard the lives of the innocent Afghan civilians? Let us know by filling in the comment form below.
