Bill Wyman’s recent comments condemning video games such as Guitar Hero and Rock Band have opened up the video game debate once again: why pretend to play rock music when you can buy a real guitar and start a band of your own?

The former Rolling Stones bassist whinged: “It makes less and less people dedicated to really get down and learn an instrument. I think is a pity so I’m not really keen on that kind of stuff.’

Now, I don’t believe this to be totally true. I play Guitar Hero simply because it is good fun, just like it’s good fun to go to the pub, go to the cinema, play football or read a good book. I have no musical talent whatsoever so actually learning to play the guitar is something that I would have to invest a lot of time into, and for what? So I can pretend that I am Slash or John Squire in my bedroom and annoy the hell out of my missus? Because that will be about my level.

These games are a fantastic way of introducing kids (or even adults) to music that they may not otherwise open their ears to. Kids play these games and may realise that it is cool to be in a band and may then decide to take up the guitar, bass, drums or singing properly and see if they have the talent to actually hone their skills. I cannot see that there are kids with natural musical talent that would choose to stop playing a real instrument in favour of either Guitar Hero or Rock Band.

These games are to guitars as karaoke is to singing – a form of entertainment using the most influential medium of all: music. They should be accepted and embraced, not vilified. It’s just good, old, harmless fun.

Having hinted already that Pop sensation, Lily Allen will be sitting next to him in the BBC Test Match Special (TMS) Oval commentary box during Saturday’s play in the 5th and final Ashes Test, Jonathan ‘Aggers’ Agnew has again been dropping more hints than the England selectors should be dropping players.

It all began when Lily Allen (@lilyroseallen) declared her love of cricket commentary and how she wouldn’t mind having a go at it herself. She tweeted:

‘i think i might try and get into Cricket commentary once i’ve finished singing,’

Aggers (@Aggerscricket) was notified of Miss Allen’s next career move via a cricket mad Twitterer named @RootyJ to which Aggers offered his services:

‘@lilyroseallen If you want some cricket commentary lessons, give me a shout! aggers.‘

Since this exchange rumours have surfaced with Aggers himself adding fuel to the fire:

‘Just secured @stephenfry for Thurs tea at the Oval. The Test will be a twitterfest if Saturday’s guest – who I spoke to yesterday -comes off.‘

Before Retweeting:

‘RT @louwaller “blatantly Lily Allen…” such confidence!‘

And finally declaring (excuse the pun):

’sat lunch will be a belter.‘

It’s clear to see that Twitter is fast becoming the communication medium of choice amongst many, including celebrities, and if it can get you a seat in the comms box at the Oval where a ticket cannot be had for love nor money (albeit it if you’re a rising, fanciable young Pop star), then it must be powerful!

Follow Lily Allen on Twitter here: http://twitter.com/lilyroseallen

And Aggers here: http://twitter.com/Aggerscricket

Oh no, that’s Google, but Twitter is growing rapidly – first for breaking news, used by footballers to drive through transfers, used to get Lily Allen into the TMS commentary box and now used as a platform with which to compose an opera!

That’s right; the Royal Opera House is to perform an opera using the help of tweeps. Twitter users can tweet their input that will make up the world’s first Twitter libretto that will be performed at the Royal Opera House in London’s Covent Garden (ROH) in September.

The idea behind this Twitter opera is simply to get more people involved as part of the ROH Ignite season.

The libretto begins thus:

A small bird twitters over there, He sings without a single care, If only we could be so free, Without the worries and the…’

Concerns of a nihilist. I would bring you flowers, but they would die. I would love you, but, why?

Act 1 Scene 2 includes a Twitter homage:

‘Look in the hash tags, fair Hans!’ twitters a passing myna bird. ‘William’s safety rests secretly among pound signs.

Join in with Your Opera by tweeting to http://twitter.com/youropera or to #youropera.

So Lily Allen, Britain’s very own Queen of Pop, has expressed her love of cricket – and in particular England fast bowler Graham Onions – via Twitter.

Lily Tweeted her Onions desire on Monday whilst keeping tabs on the fifth and final day’s play of the third Ashes Test.

Allen cheekily tweeted: ‘i think i fancy Graham Onions more than Freddie now. i’ve heard he goes for days… either 3 or five…hehe.’

Twitter is seemingly taking over the universe and has been the first medium to break news on a number of occasions. There was confusion amongst many US Twits on Friday as #Ashes became one of the most popular trending topics; the excitement of this most fiercely contested of Test match series’ was totally lost on the yanks.

And talking of Onions and Twitter in the same (smelly) breath, this bit of Twittering follows on from the wittery (or should that be Twittery?) of one bright spark who created the Ashes related hashtag, #Punions.

As puns regarding Onions started to circle the Twitterverse during the Durham paceman’s blistering Friday morning wicket spree, #Punions were flowing aplenty. Read here for more…

Allen also divulged her next career move when Tweeting: ‘i think i might try and get into Cricket commentary once i’ve finished singing,’ she concluded.

BBC commentator Jonathan Agnew Tweeted Allen, offering his services: ‘@lilyroseallen If you want some cricket commentary lessons, give me a shout! aggers.’

Rumour has it, Aggers had been notified of Allen’s interest in commentary by @RootyJ – who, according to Sky Sports News’ cricket correspondent, Adam Leventhal, is the creator of #Punions.

The power of Twitter eh!

Expect the, ahem, strength of #Punions to continue during the fourth Ashes Test which starts on Friday. It’s all good fun and is another example of the beauty of Twitter, maybe Allen can win over Onions with her #Punions?

So Chris Brown has made a public apology for beating up his then girlfriend Rihanna, almost six months after he punched and bit her and threatened to ‘kill her’. Everyone must forgive him and accept his apology, especially his victim right? And his image will surely be repaired after this surely, no?

This reeks of desperation for a celebrity who is fearing the end of his career. Utterly pathetic. It has been stated that Brown will escape a prison sentence and will receive a suspended sentence and six months community service. Well, that’ll certainly teach him never to raise his hands to a female again won’t it, a bit of gardening and fence painting. Utterly ridiculous: what message does that send?

If Brown was a blue collar citizen the Judge would throw the book at him, no question. Simply because he is a celebrity, he receives special treatment and gets off relatively Scott free and at the same time impressionable kids will believe that if Chris Brown can beat up women and not go to jail then maybe they can too.

This public show of remorse is beyond distasteful, not least because it is obvious that Brown has been told by those who look after him that he needs to restore his public image. It is evidence that Brown is as shallow as he is criminal.

Gone are the days when stars could mingle and behave like common people but that does not mean that they should get preferential treatment especially when they behave like an animal.

Watch his pitiful apology from this excuse of a human being right here, if you can stomach it. See his eyes scrolling the cue cards – yeah that came from the heart didn’t it Chris.
