Brussels: Much More Than Just Mussels
So much more than simply the location for the European Parliament and a place to consume copious amounts of Belgian beer, Brussels boasts a wealth of attractions and activities, which is why so many people are booking Brussels city breaks.
Disregarding the obvious for a change – you will no doubt try mussels in Brussels - take a look at our top five refreshingly beer-free things to see and do in the Belgian capital.
1. The Atomium. This strange-looking 102-meter-tall architectural sculpture is modelled on an iron molecule magnified by 150 thousand million. Built in 1958, the building hosts vantage points from which you can see a panoramic view of Brussels, as well as a top restaurant.
2. Mini Europe. See Europe in miniature at the foot of the Atomium, which replicates around 80 European cities and 350 buildings to a scale of 1:25, and is very highly acclaimed for its quality of models.
3. Eat chocolate. Have an afternoon of hedonistic delight as you sample some of the finest chocolates in the world. Some of the little chocolate shops have been family-run for 100 years or more, and chocolates are produced as art forms.
4. Visit the Comic Strip Museum. See the likes of Tintin and the Smurfs, both famous Belgian-artist creations, in original sketches and artwork.
5. Beer. All joking aside, there’s actually no escaping the fact that while on a Brussels city break, one would be doing an awful disservice if one did not sample some of the wonderful Belgian beer on offer. There are, after all, more than two varieties of beer in Belgium for every day of the year.
